Germany Surpasses 200 Tonnes of Medical Cannabis Imports in 2025
Germany imports more than 200 tonnes of medical cannabis for the first time
In 2025, Germany surpassed the threshold of 200 tonnes of imported cannabis for medical or medical-scientific purposes for the first time. Industry reporting based on newly published BfArM data puts the annual volume at 201,094 kg. In 2024, imports had amounted to 72,706 kg. [1]

The development highlights the continued momentum of the German market. According to the published evaluations, import volumes increased strongly over the course of the year and remained at a historically high level. Canada remained the most important supplier country, while Portugal and other international source markets further expanded their role in supplying the German market. [1]
This trend is also visible at the official level. BfArM continues to publish quarterly import statistics for 2024/2025 as well as country-of-origin overviews for cannabis imported into Germany for medical and medical-scientific purposes. Under the MedCanG framework, each import or export of medical cannabis requires a corresponding authorisation by BfArM in addition to the necessary permit under Section 4 MedCanG. [2]
For pharmacies, pharmaceutical wholesalers, manufacturers and international partners, this development points to one clear conclusion: reliable supply chains, regulatory certainty and high-quality pharmaceutical processes are becoming even more important in the German medical cannabis market.
